Adobe AIR for Android now available on Android Market

October 8, 2010, By Thomas Antony

Adobe AIR is a multi platform application development system from Adobe. It is based on Adobe Flash and can be used to make standalone Rich Internet Applications. The Adobe AIR application platform is now available for Android and can be downloaded from the Android market.

This makes Android the fifth platform capable of running Rich Internet Applications made using the AIR system. AIR apps will now be able to run on Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android.

This opens up a whole new way for apps to be ported to Android and also opens up Android devices to a wide range of AIR apps already available. Developers can now work on a single set of code and publishj it across five different platforms at once.

The download from Android Market contains only a runtime which is required to run the AIR apps. The AIR apps for Android will be distributed through the Android Market like the usual Android apps. Of course, they will only work if the user has the AIR runtime installed. Adobe AIR for Android will require a smartphone running Android 2.2 Froyo.
