How to Install Compatible Printers for Mac OS X

October 5, 2010, By Fouad Bajwa

Apple’s Mac OS X operating system provides support for a number of printers. The latest version of Mac OS X v10.6 includes compatible software for many printer and scanner models available on the market by various top vendors and manufacturers.

You can install this software from the Mac OS X v10.6 Install DVD or update using Software Update here as some models have software available through Software Update only from the Apple Website.

Installing compatible software for printers and scanners

  1. Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard by default installs software supporting the printers currently used by your Mac and nearby printers on your network as well as popular printer and scanner models.
  2. Click the Customize button during Mac OS X v10.6 installation to choose and install software only for printers currently used by your Mac. You should deselect all Printer Support options, except for “Printers Used by This Mac”
  3. You can also choose to install all of the printer and scanner software that is available from your Mac OS X Install DVD and you should select all Printer Support options, including “All Available Printers” to benefit.
  4. As mentioned in the beginning, to access any software for printers that may not be installed during a Mac OS X installation, choose Software Update from the Apple menu, allow it to complete the process: “Checking for new software,” and then connect your printer or add it using the Print & Fax pane of System Preferences.
  5. Provided the software for your printer is available through Software Update, you will see a prompt asking if you would like to download and install this software.
  6. In the event that you do not have access to the internet, insert your Mac OS X Install DVD and use Optional Installs to install the printer software available from the DVD.
  7. Finally we recommend you to visit the Mac OS X v10.6 Printer and scanner software support page here for a list of detailed compatible printer drivers sorted by vendors.
