iOS 4.2 beta 2 3G Tethering Likely on Apple iPad

Apple had recently released the iOS 4.2 beta 2 and it came with a lot of features such as new animation and YouTube upload options. But new information is suggesting that it will also bring internet tethering to the iPad.

A new Internet Tethering option was found within the APN network settings on an iPad 3G (with iOS 4.2 Beta 2) on a European wireless carrier. A Swedish user noticed that the APN Settings section in Cellular Data had a separate Internet Tethering category that asks for the APN, username and password separately from regular access.

If an internet tethering option is available, it will allow you to tether your iPad 3G’s internet connection to other devices such as a laptop, so you will be able to share your iPad 3G connection with your laptop via USB cable.

But the bad news is that this tethering option has not yet appeared on AT&T devices. AT&T has only just recently enabled tethering on the iPhone. There is a possibility that they activate it on the iPad also sometime in the near future. If it arrives, the feature will most likely be a straightforward adaptation of iPhone tethering to the tablet rather than a mobile hotspot function.
