During yesterday’s COD event, folks from Treyarch revealed more details about the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer gameplay. As expected, the company showed off a Black Ops trailer with the new and improved features of the game, and we’re sad to say there’s no word on Zombies.

One of the most interesting new features are the Wager matches. These are four new free-for-all based game-modes that are separate from a user’s normal online progression. Basically you’re kind of “gambling” your hard earned COD points against other players — when a stage is over, first three in the rankings will win the pot, the other lose it all.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Wager game modes

  • One in the Chamber : You spawn with a pistol, one bullet and three lives. Fire and kill the player and you’ll get their bullet, or miss and the only weapon you have is your melee attack — certainly makes the game interesting as this mode will test the pure skill of even the best players.
  • Sticks and Stones : You’re in the game only with a crossbow, a ballistic knife and a tomahawk. The rules are made in such a way that if you kill players with your tomahawk, not only they die, you also bankrupt them.
  • Gun Game : All opponents start with pistols, but then progress to the next weapons level with each kill; however, if you get killed, you’re down one level. The one who gets to the last weapon will win the game.
  • Sharp Shooter : You’re in the game with the same randomly selected weapon as others, and you use that for a random amount of time. Then it gets switched to another random weapon, again and again, and again.

“We created the mode after we found out that some 30-40% of people who play single-player, never play multiplayer,” said multiplayer design director David Vonderhaar.

“Combat training is a complete stand alone experience with an independent ranking system. You can play it alone or with friends, you can use it to practise maps, or certain weapons or advanced tactics, and when you’re ready you can enter a player match and test your skills against real opponents. It’s our goal to introduce multiplayer to an entirely new audience who we feel are missing out,” he added.

An interesting feature is a new currency system, the COD points (the more kills, the more points). You spend your points on contracts (specialized challenges split up in categories like Mercenaries, Operations and Specialist) or you can gamble them in Call of Duty: Black Ops Wager matches.

Other changes are the Care Packages that will contain new weapons; one is the Death Machine (a mini-gun) and the Grim Reaper (a grenade launcher). Also, kill-streak rewards will include, Mortar Team, Napalm Strike, the Radio Controlled Car, Gunship and SAM Turret.

Another significant addition is that a lot of things in Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer are customizable. From player’s emblems which you change using the Emblem Editor to the color of the weapons or the targeting reticule, you choose what should be changed and you do it.
