Well this doesn’t look so good – after all the positive hype surrounding the upcoming Kinect controller from Microsoft, it’s time for some bad news (highly dependent on where you live though). Apparently, the controller will only support a handful of languages, namely English (both the American and British versions), Japanese and Mexican Spanish for its voice control features.
There are rumors of Microsoft planning to add more languages post-release, but one thing is for sure – if you live in a non-English speaking country in Europe, forget about sweet-talking your Kinect into action on release. And no, knowing English won’t help you either – the Kinect inherits your Xbox 360’s region restrictions, so the option of English will be locked out.
As for the rumors we mentioned above – it’s possible that an update is on the way, scheduled for Spring 2011, which will introduce more languages to the controller. Yes, we know it’s puzzling that the controller will support the various American accents of the English language yet it will treat Canadian speech as alien, and we can only hope that the rumored update will come out sooner.
