Sony Ericsson have confirmed that by the end of September, Xperia X10 owners will be able to install Android 2.1 Eclair on their handsets.

Although we can’t really call it an official announcement, as SE responded with a Tweet to a user asking when the update will happen, it’s good to finally hear that a beefy mobile phone like the Xperia X10 will no longer lack in terms of software.

@KOR_9S We can only confirm that the upgrade to Android 2.1 is due for release before the end of September this year. We hope this helps.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 just recently launched on August 15 on AT&T. Although it’s packed with goodies — like a 4.0-inch capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, facial recognition, geotagging and image stabilization, accelerometer or a digital compass, just to name a few — the handset still runs the old Android 1.6 OS.

Which means you’re not using the updated browser UI with deeper HTML5 integration or the bettered virtual keyboard, and you can’t take advantage of all those hardware optimizations that come with Android 2.1, either.

Not sure about you folks, but I honestly think that Sony Ericsson is kind of late on this one.
