New Patent for Rotating BlackBerry Phone Looks… Questionable

August 26, 2010, By Radimir Bobev

Looking at this latest picture of a patent filed by RIM for a BlackBerry phone with multiple rotational features, we can only sincerely hope that this idea is something from their archives which they’ve chosen to abandon in favor of the Torch’s form factor. From what we can see in the pictures, the idea is that the device can flip forward and backward, unveiling a QWERT keyboard, but also rotate around an additional axis to switch between portrait and landscape modes.

The new phone seems to have some G1-styled hinges controlling the motion, which speaks even worse for it in terms of convenience – these things are known to make it quite an unpleasante experience when you want to get a phone using them out of your pocket, as has been shown previously.

However, as we mentioned above, RIM probably chose to ditch this idea and went ahead with the Torch at some point, seeing as how it’s just the logical continuation of an idea of this type. Let’s hope this is the case exactly.
