August 3, 2010, By Alex Ion

The Canadians from RIM have officially announced today in New York, their latest handset, the BlackBerry Torch. Seen as a competitor to Apple’s iPhone 4, the new BlackBerry Torch tries to charm with a touchscreen and slide-out keyboard (that’s great for those who can’t stand the touch), the new BlackBerry 6 OS which comes packed with a new browser, and a 5 megapixel camera with a flash.

People in the US will get the new BlackBerry Torch from AT&T who will sell it from August 12 for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement. However, there’s no word when Telus and Rogers will bring it to their customers in Canada, as there’s no release date or pricing details with them.

“This is one of the most important product introductions in our history. It’s a really special product because so much new goodness has been added to it.” said Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s president and co-chief executive. “The fact that this device is going to be geared toward both enterprise and consumer, that will be a positive as people will feel that if they design for this device, they can hit two birds with one stone,” he added.
