HTC EVO 4G To Get Feature-Heavy Android 2.2 Update From August 3 Onwards

July 30, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Sprint has announced that it will start rolling out the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the HTC EVO 4G smartphone from August 3 onwards. The official announcement was made soon after a leaked internal memo from Sprint was leaked online, leading to rumors of a July 30 date for the Froyo update.

However, the update could become available from August 1 itself, for a limited number of EVO 4G users, with a larger scale release taking place from August 3. The leaked memo from Sprint had said that the update was a top priority for them, for reasons that were competitive in nature.

It has been reported that the new update will contain many additional features such as extra preloaded widgets including the widgets for calculator, message list view and FM radio. The update will also allow the EVO 4G to shoot HD video in low light conditions. The smartphone’s LED flash will also get the ability to function as a flashlight, once the Android OS is updated to Froyo.

Other additional features to arrive with the update include improved quality of recorded video and 4-way rotation for the camera icons along with the camera. However, the update will stop any hotspot facilities that have been activated by a previously-released hack.

Sprint has mentioned that the EVO 4G devices can be used while downloading the update, but not during the process of installation. But that’s just a small price to pay for a major update, right?
