HP To Release WebOS 2.0 Later This Year

July 23, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The Head of HP’s Palm Division Jon Rubinstein, who was earlier the CEO of Palm Inc, has said in an interview to Fortune magazine that the company will release version 2.0 of its operating software called webOS, later this year.

As it is already July and there are only 5 months left for the year to end, the news of a webOS 2.0 release has led to rumors of the release of an HP PalmPad tablet device or a Pre 2 smartphone by the end of the year as well. Rubinstein has himself said in the interview that the company is aggressively developing the hardware that will run on the webOS 2.0 platform.

HP had mentioned during its acquisition process of Palm Inc at a cost of $1.2 billion, that one of the key aims of its purchase was to acquire Palm’s webOS operating software. The company had also mentioned its intentions to make the operating software available on a wider range of products that included tablet PCs.

If HP does release webOS 2.0 by the end of this year, then 2011 could witness a competition between several newly upgraded operating softwares including the iOS4, BlackBerry 6.0, Windows Phone 7, webOS 2.0 and even possibly the Android 3.0 Gingerbread. Who do you think will win?
