Microsoft Wields The Axe; Hundreds Across Global Locations Issued Lay-Off Notices

July 8, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

We have been hearing about this for quite some time now. The latest is that it is happening already. Microsoft has started wielding the axe at its Seattle hub as well as global operations. It is being reported that hundreds of employees globally and at its Seattle facility have lost their jobs.

The layoff notices issued are believed to be part of the strategic realignment that Microsoft traditionally makes effective at the start of every fiscal. Though the exact numbers are not known, the numbers are said to be much below the 5,800 layoff notices issued last year.

We get to hear that the axed workers have been those working with various marketing groups in the company. This also brings to the fore speculations as to the lay offs are part of the company’s strategy with regard to the Windows Phone. There has been talk that the Windows Phone group was being realigned following the failure of Kin.  The departure of J Allard and Robbie Bach is also said to be a reason for Microsoft to prune workforce in this manner.

Though Microsoft has not yet made a public statement regarding the lay-offs, its also being said that some of the employees axed could be invited back into the company when new job positions arise.
