The latest casualty in the financial crisis that’s been shaking the nation, the PT Cruiser model from Chrysler will discontinue production on July 9, 2010.

Long admired by many, the “Personal Transport” Cruiser, renowned for its retro-spunky style, roomy interior, superior handling, and smooth ride, will be surely missed. Hundreds of fan sites from around the world, from the UK to Switzerland to Japan to Australia, are hanging virtual flags at half staff in sadness for the Cruiser’s passing.

I grew up being into cars, and my favorite was always the sporty 1993 Plymouth Prowler concept car, upon which the PT Cruiser’s iconic design was based. The “horns” on the bumper and the racecar-like front wheels made it the coolest in the world, to my preteen imagination. When I saw the first PT Cruiser commercial in 2001, I thought, “Finally! Mainstream cars are cool again!”

The PT Cruiser has seen dozens of special editions, including a turbocharged high-performance version and a convertible in addition to the standard compact sedan. One of the most-loved features of every edition, however, lies with its name: the PT was a damn fine cruiser. If you wanted to show off and feel cool, if you wanted to take your special someone on a jaunt through the country, or if you just wanted to get out and clear your head, the PT Cruiser helped you do it in style, comfort and, dare I say it, grace.

And grace is the underlying reason why the PT Cruiser cheated death again and again, with an impressive ten-year run with one of the most embattled auto companies in the world.

Mark Phelan with the Detroit Free Press describes Chrysler’s relationship with the Cruiser perfectly. It “found itself unprepared for success…” and tried to shut down PT production. However, “[the PT Cruiser] won reprieve after reprieve because people kept buying it.” Despite the lack of an advertising budget, people kept buying it. In this day and age, what other American commodities can we say that about?

But, no longer. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. I never did get to realize my dream of owning a brand new PT Cruiser. Those of you who do own one, hold onto them! They’re sure to be big moneymakers in the future … if you’ll ever want to part with yours. For the rest of us, July 9, 2010 will be tinged with a little bit of sadness.

Graceful little PT, we’ll surely miss you.
