Droid 2 Running Android 2.2 OS To Launch On August 23?

Motorola’s Droid 2 smartphone will hit stores by the 23rd of August with Android 2.2 Froyo as its operating software, according to an online rumor. The launch date of the phone has reportedly been fixed for late in the month of August to make it the first phone from Motorola and Verizon to feature the Android 2.2 OS during its launch.

Efforts to finalize Android 2.2 as the operating software for the Droid 2 before its launch are also reportedly going on at Motorola. The Droid 2’s predecessor, the Motorola Droid, has been rumored to receive the Android 2.2 update in late July whereas Motorola’s latest smartphone, the Droid X, is expected to get the Froyo update in August.

Test models of the Droid 2 that have been created are presently functioning with version 2.1 of the Android OS. However, both the Droid X and the Droid 2 devices have a lot of similarities in their specifications and features including the OMAP 3630 processor from Texas Instruments that is capable of processing at speeds of up to 1 GHz.

Therefore, the availability of the Froyo update for the Droid X in August could translate into the Android 2.2 coming pre-installed with the Droid 2 handset, if it releases later that month. However, pricing for the Droid 2 handset is still unknown.
