SlingPlayer App For Android Releases Today

June 22, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The SlingPlayer Mobile app developed by Sling Media to control the Slingbox set-top box remotely through a WiFi or 3G network using an Android device will be officially available for download from the Android Market from today onwards.

The app comes with a newly designed number pad that makes it easier to switch to a particular channel on the set-top box. Slingbox’s user interface can also be accessed and operated very easily using the new app.

However, one of the most important features of the SlingPlayer app is that it allows users to watch streaming videos from a Slingbox device. It can also be used for searching or browsing through channels on the device. Users can access pay-per-view content and view content in the video-on-demand category as well. The Digital Video Recorder on the Slingbox can also be operated remotely using the new app.

A demo video of the streaming video feature of the SlingPlayer app playing on the Android-powered HTC EVO 4G handset was shared by the company last month. The pricing of the app, which was not revealed at that time, has now been revealed to be $30.
