June 11, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Drift Innovation has unveiled its new HD170 sports camcorder which is capable of recording videos of up to 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second. The action camera is fitted with a wide angle lens that has a lens angle of 170 degrees. The lens is also capable of rotating 300 degrees and allows the user to shoot videos from a first person perspective.

Users can frame their shots in cases of the camera being mounted on a vehicle or helmet using the 1.5-inch color LCD screen that is present on the side of the camera. The footage can also be previewed immediately on the screen. The camera can shoot video in low light conditions owing to the night mode feature. It comes with a wireless RF remote control as well which allows for hands-free operation of the camera during action. Digital zoom of up to 4x is also possible for 720p and WVGA resolution in the camera.

The camera is also capable of taking photos of up to 5 megapixels. In the burst mode, it takes pictures once in every few seconds till the memory becomes full. The HD170 has a small internal memory of just 32 MB. However, it can accommodate SDHC cards of up to 32 GB as external memory, which is used for storing video footage. The HD170 is water resistant till 0.5 metres.

The camera, which consists of a standard internal microphone, comes with an external microphone as well. This allows the user to record sound while eliminating wind noise in case the camera is mounted on a fast-moving object.

A mount that allows the camera to be fitted to a variety of surfaces as well as a HD TV output cable will be available with the camera when it ships in late July for a price of $330.
