iPhone 4 Video Calling: Official Announcement [iPhone 4 To Have ‘FaceTime’ App]

June 7, 2010, By Intermaggio

Just announced at Apple’s WWDC 2010 is something that’s sure to make a lot of people happy- the iPhone 4 will have the capability to video chat with other iPhones!

The app that supports video calling is named FaceTime, and has some nifty features we haven’t seen before. It’s possible to choose to stream video from either of the two cameras (front-facing or rear-facing), and you can do a few other things like change the orientation of the video from landscape to portrait.

A couple more things of note:

  • At present, FaceTime only works over WiFi- no 3G support yet, however Steve Jobs confirms that Apple fully intends to get the software working on 3G
  • The whole system is built on already established video calling standards, meaning it should be cross-compatible with other video calling software, which also implies that 3rd parties will be able to develop apps of their own for video calling- though this is yet to be confirmed.

We’re very excited to see this, among countless new features in the iPhone 4. Seriously- is there anything this phone doesn’t do?
