HP Not to Stay Away from webOS; Lines Up Larger Strategy to Bring in More Tablets and Smartphones

June 4, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

If you thought HP has distanced itself from webOS for smartphones, think again!  The company has taken a new turn and has announced that smartphones from Palm would keep coming. The company believes that webOS would continue to stay as the backbone for many of its small form factor devices.

Significant still is the fact that the company has thought about it as a larger strategy, and would bring in more devices such as tablets and printers into the fold.

The announcement from HO comes in the wake of the market now opening up a wide range of interconnected devices – be it tablet PCs printers or smartphones. The strategy comes riding expectations that the webOS footprint may get expanded beyond just the smartphone market.

HP is seen as looking at a cashing in on such a market place buoyed by its financial muscle, scale, and global reach so that smartphones would be prime players in the strategy.

The move comes as manna for Palm as it had been earlier made to stay away from expanding to various carrier networks or into different markets due to the lack of this platform.

A bit late, but then as goes the adage, better late then never seems to abide by HP’s new decision. What do you have to say?
