LaCie’s “Rugged Safe” External Hard Drive Keeps Your Data Safe – Literally

May 26, 2010, By Radimir Bobev

LaCie have been known for their unique style of designing products, as they’ve shown us over the last few years with several of their items. One of the things that they stand out from the competition with, is their naming style. For example, take a look at their Rugged series, which is a line of shock-resistant hard drives – the newest addition to that line is the Rugged Safe.

The new model adds several security features that will give you all the security you will need for your data – you get a fingerprint scanner built directly into the hard drive’s external plate – which is armor-plated, by the way. The hard drive itself comes in two varieties, a 500GB and 1TB one – and it’s now protected by 128-bit AES encryption.

You can add up to 10 users to the HDD’s access list, and they’ll have access to the files either via USB or FireWire – but there’s no support for USB 3.0 or eSATA. The price is quite good though, with the 500GB model being offered for $189, and the 1TB one coming at $299. Sure, it’s not a killer price for a hard drive, but just think of your friends’ expressions when you press your finger against that fingerprint scanner.
