Dell has announced that it will launch its new device, the Streak, in the UK in early June on mobile service provider O2’s network. The company will then release the product in other parts of Europe followed by a US launch later this summer.

The Streak is capable of making calls, taking pictures and includes the capabilities of a tablet PC. However, Dell will be selling it as a portable tablet PC rather than a smartphone even though this is the first device manufactured by Dell with built-in phone capabilities.

The gadget has a 5-inch WVGA capacitative multi-touch screen and runs on the Android 1.6 operating system. A 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm placed inside the device powers its operations and the 2GB internal memory stores apps from the Android Market and other data. The memory can also be expanded externally up to 32 GB on the device through the microSD card slot. It features a customized user interface and has a 5 megapixel camera in the back and a VGA camera in the front. A 1530 mAh battery is also part of this gadget that is equipped with 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. The device also features Google Maps with functions for turn-by-turn navigation.

The device will only be available in the color black during launch, but Dell will later release it in many other colors and designs. The company has also said that it will provide updates for Android 2.2 Froyo as well as Flash 10.1 at a later part of the year. The Dell Streak will be sold in the UK at O2 stores, O2’s UK website and The Carphone Warehouse.  O2 will later announce the UK price and the data plans for the phone when it becomes available through its network.
