AT&T Providing Free Wi-Fi Internet in New York City

May 25, 2010, By Radimir Bobev

AT&T are now offering a free Wi-Fi access spot in New York, in an attempt to relieve the network from the increasing congestion lately. The wireless hot spot is located in New York’s Times Square, and the pilot program will offer free access to the network to any AT&T customers with laptops, smartphones, and anything else that supports Wi-Fi.

The precise location of the network is on the north side of the Times Square, on Seventh Avenue between 45th and 47th streets. One of the main goals of this program is to see how Wi-Fi connectivity can be used to relieve the wireless data congestion on AT&T’s network. Those who have Wi-Fi enabled devices will be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network directly, instead of using the 3G network for Internet and Internet-based applications.

According to AT&T, the demand for wireless services has grown tremendously over the years, mostly owing to the iPhone – a rough estimate is that there’s been a 5000% (yes, five thousand percent) increase over just three years.
