Vodafone has announced that it will offer roaming services to UK customers leaving for South Africa, at local UK rates. The company said that the offer would allow its UK customers traveling to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup to call home from their mobile phones at normal rates.

The “Passport Promotion” offer will be available during June and July. Customers in the UK can begin the service by paying a connection charge of 75 pence, following which UK local rates will become applicable for all roaming calls. In case of the customer having a minute-based contract or the Vodafone Freedom Pack minutes which allows the customer to pay as they go, the call charges will be deducted from the contract. The customer can also send text messages at the local rate of 11 pence.

Vodafone’s international data rates of £3 per megabyte for the first 5 megabytes will be applicable for users using their phones to browse the net or use Twitter and Facebook.  Net surfing for Vodafone customers in Europe will be charged at £1 per megabyte for the first 5 megabytes.

The mobile carrier is also offering a real-tine text alert service for its users, free of cost, to warn users as they come close to ending their data limit so that they don’t exceed the limit.  If you are a Vodafone customer, you can avail of the Passport Promotion offer by calling 555.
