HTC Wildfire Official; Release Date Announced: Entry-Level Smartphone Alternative to HTC Incredible, Also From Verizon

May 17, 2010, By Intermaggio

As if we hadn’t heard enough news from HTC lately, they’ve just unveiled another awesome phone that’s sure to be a hit- the HTC Wildfire. Now, at first glance, it seems like any other smartphone, but when you consider the situation, it’s a brilliant marketing move on HTC’s part to announce this phone now, and to be ready to release it so soon- even during the booming success of the HTC Incredible.

Let me say this first: the HTC Wildfire is NOT a clone of the Incredible. It’s got much more relaxed specs, and for good reason.

  • 525MHz Qualcomm MSM 7225 CPU
  • 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash
  • 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • 512 MB flash memory
  • 384 MB RAM
  • expandable microSD storage

So why release a smartphone with weaker specs then their very own baby? To appeal to a younger crowd. HTC wants first-time smartphone buyers to have an option that isn’t quite as intimidating as a $200 phone with a flux capacitor and so many bells and whistles.

It’s a smart move, we think- and the timing couldn’t have been better. HTC are using the success of the Droid Incredible to their great advantage. Just as the older crowd gets used to their nice, fancy new Droids, their kids will be finishing the year at school, and eagerly waiting for their graduation presents.

The HTC Wildfire is scheduled to release by the end of Quarter 3, which means that by the end of summer at the latest, this awesome phone should be in your hands.

What’s your take on HTC’s marketing strategy? Would you buy this phone for your kids?
