Google Android Tablet Coming to Verizon; Google Tablet to Take on Apple’s iPad?

May 13, 2010, By Alex Ion

The big news is not that the demand for Apple’s iPad is exceeding their supply. It’s the fact that Google Inc. and Verizon Wireless are teaming up to come out with a tablet computer that rivals against Apple’s iPad.

There is some controversy of whether or not the software running on the device will be Android or Chrome OS based. Most likely the operating system will be Android based due to the success of Android based phones on Verizon’s network, such as the HTC Droid.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon’s chief executive, Lowell McAdam, “What do we think the next big wave of opportunities are?” McAdam stated. “We’re working on tablets together, for example. We’re looking at all the things Google has in its archives that we could put on a tablet to make it a great experience.”

Clearly this confirms the rumors of a tablet being released by Google. The difference between Apple’s iPad and the Google Tablet is the operating system running on them.

The Google Tablet most likely will run the Android operating system meaning it’s free to customize by third-party developers, allowing for a broader range of applications and settings. Google’s Android is open source and provides “freedom” to developer contribution.

Apple’s iPad OS is restricted in developer contribution, while its open to input, it has certain restrictions due to copyright laws.

The competition between Google and Apple has given us the prediction that every time either company comes out with a new product, the other company is going to rebuttal with a comparable product. While, it is exciting to see other implementations of similar products between both companies, it is getting more difficult for consumers to choose which product is better.

The Apple iPad is in high demand and has exceeded their expectations. Google figures this is an opportunity to reveal a comparable product on one of the top wireless carriers in the United States. Apple has its upcoming WWDC, which there may be announcements of a possible iPhone implementation with Verizon Wireless.

After the recent news of Verizon’s collaboration with Google, it seems that this is very unlikely.

In the coming months we will see who is the top dog in the tablet device market.

Apple has the lead with the iPad, but its still fair game for Google.
