Samsung and Sony Android-based TVs in the Offing; Google Yet to Confirm Existence of Google TV

Samsung Electronics is said to be developing slim television sets that would run Google’s Android OS. Interestingly, it isn’t just Samsung who is working n this platform. We hear that Sony too has kick-started efforts to bring to the market its version of Android TV very soon.

Samsung has revealed that the company is currently examining the business feasibility of such a venture, saying that it will decide whether to develop Android-based TVs after details about Google TVs are available. In the meantime, Sony is working with Google and Intel to offer Internet-connected, Android-based TVs.

If plans work as per schedule, customers will be able to download and enjoy Web content and software, similar to what they currently get to do on notebooks and smartphones. Sony is likely to introduce its Android-based TV possibly by the end of this year.

We also learn that Samsung’s Google TV could happen as Google’s Android is an open platform. However, the catch is that Samsung could lose its control over the TV market to Google if it ventures into making make Google TVs.

What is more interesting in this context is that Google has not confirmed the existence of Google TV. The platform, which would probably use a customized version of Android that deploys a full Chrome browser for web duties, is now in the news. More stuff on that is expected in the coming days.
