Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Sold 40 Million Units So Far

April 26, 2010, By Radimir Bobev

Microsoft seem to be doing well with the Xbox 360 – at least if sales figures are to be of any indication. Since the console was introduced to the market in November 2005, 40 million units of it have been sold through retail stores, according to a report by Microsoft themselves.

The report was a part of the company’s financial update – Nintendo and Sony, who are their main competitors on the console market, should release their own reports in the coming days/weeks, too. Unofficial word has it that the Sony have sold 33.71 million PS3 consoles, with the Wii holding the lead with 67.45 million sales.

there’s even an annual breakdown for those of you interested in how well they were doing – as you can see, 2008 was the peak of the 360’s popularity, and it saw a decline the year after – it’d be interesting to see what happens this year.

FY 2006 / July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006: 5.0 million Xbox 360s
FY 2007 / July 1, 2006 – June 30, 2007: 6.6 million Xbox 360s
FY 2008 / July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2008: 8.7 million Xbox 360s
FY 2009 / July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009: 11.2 million Xbox 360s
FY 2010 / July 1, 2009 – March 31, 2010: 8.8 million Xbox 360s
