How to Convert an MP4 to an MPEG Movie Using Media-Convert

April 14, 2010, By Desi Mikkel

Have an MP4 format file that you need to convert to MPEG, but don’t have the software you need to do it with. You can use Media-Convert and convert your video file via the cloud. Let Media-Convert Servers do all the heavy lifting for you. Plus you will have an easy way to download the video and share it when your done, all cost free.

Note: Media-Convert is free of charge and converts files up to 200 Mb. Please be aware that you are responsible for any data you send and are expected to refrain from sending anything illegal to Media-Convert servers. Although Media-Convert allows you to convert many different file types, this tutorial focuses on converting an MP4 to MPEG.

Using Media-Convert to Convert your Media

Go to media-convert.com

Click ‘browse’ to select the MPEG-4 video you want to upload from your computer. Once your file is selected, the Input format should be filled in automatically to MPEG-4 (.mp4).

Go to where it says ‘Output format’ and choose either DVD NTSC or DVD PAL (depending on your region) and MPEG-2 (.mpg).

Optional – Proceed to the ‘Advanced setting’ section of the page to specify Frames/sec, Audio Quality, Video Quality and other information. If you have uploaded a particularly large file and wish to be notified by e-mail when your conversion is done, you can find that option here as well in the ‘Advanced setting’ area. For this tutorial, I have decided to leave everything in the ‘Advance settings’ section in it’s default mode, to show that this step is purely optional.

If you have reviewed all the settings and are OK with the terms of service, go ahead and click the ‘OK’ button.

At this point, or shortly after.. you should see a ‘File Upload Progression’ message, which tells you how your upload is going.

When it is finished you will see a message telling you what que position your file is in.

Once your que position has reached zero, you should see two messages one saying, ‘Intializing’

and another one soon after saying, ‘Data processing…’

Note: for me this process took several minutes. Larger file sizes will most likely take longer.

When media-converter is done converting your file, you will see a message saying ‘File successfull converted!’ and will then be presented with a link that you can click on to save out the file.

When your file is done downloading, open your media player of choice to view your video in it’s new format. If you found this tutorial useful, please share it 🙂
