Google Rebrands to Topeka, April Fool’s Joke or How Google Lost Their Sense of Humor

April 1, 2010, By Alex Ion

Google has announced that the company will change name to Topeka starting 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st. Apparently the decision is a way of saying thank you to the citizens of Topeka in Kansas, who stunned the world earlier last month saying that they’ll switch the city’s name to Google.

“We didn’t reach this decision lightly; after all, we had a fair amount of brand equity tied up in our old name. But the more we surfed around (the former) Topeka’s municipal website, the more kinship we felt with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains,” says Eric Schmidt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Topeka Inc.,on the company’s official blog.

From what it looks like, Google employees will be referred to as Topekers or Topekans, and from now on, when you’ll search for something you’ll refer to it as “I did a Topeka search on it / or / I just Topeka’ed him”. Bugger.

Getting back to Earth, it’s obvious that Google (not the former town of Topeka) is pulling a prank on you, but to be honest I was expecting better from them.
