Google Introduce Ads That “Travel” Between Websites

Google have made some additions to their advertizing program AdSense. Now, there’s a new tool that allows ads from a certain category to be displayed cross-site.

The company have given the following example to illustrate how the new system works:

Let’s say you’re a basketball team with tickets that you want to sell. You can put a piece of code on your tickets page on your website, which will let you later show relevant ticket ads (such as last minute discounts) to everyone who visits that page, as they subsequently browse sites in the Google Content Network.

Now, this sounds great in theory, but when you think about it for a while, you’ll start to notice some potential pitfalls. For example, what if your browsing habits include things you wouldn’t be comfortable showing others? Now imagine you’re surfing the web from an Internet cafe while logged into your Google account… and you probably get the idea.

Some people at the Congress apparently aren’t very happy with the direction things are going, either, as they’re planning on applying some control over this practice.
