Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is Getting External Drive Support Soon

March 18, 2010, By Radimir Bobev

The Xbox 360 is very likely to soon get USB mass storage support, as indicated by some screenshots and documentation which look completely legitimate and official. However, there are some potential downsides noticeable as well.

It looks like the 360 will support any hard drive over 1 GB, which can be dedicated to the Xbox 360 either fully or partially. You can store your games, DLC, as well as game updates – and also your avatars.

The downside we mentioned earlier though, is that it seems that Microsoft have put a 16 GB limit on the Xbox 360 partitions. When you consider that the original Xbox 360 was released with a 20 GB hard drive, this does seem a bit peculiar. Let’s hope this limitation is revised before we get to see this in action.

While it’s good to see Microsoft finally adding the long-awaited support for external drives, we can’t help but wonder why they went with such a ridiculous limitation on the size – there really isn’t any logical reason for that.
