Portal 2 Announced; Valve Finally Reveals the Mystery Behind the Recent Cryptic Updates

March 5, 2010, By Radimir Bobev

On March 1, Portal, one of Valve’s hit shooter titles, received a strange update which continued to evolve into a deep, intricate puzzle with hidden clues. People were decoding sound files using steganography, decrypting MD5 hashes, and even logging into a dial-up BBS system.

Noone really knew where this was all leading to, with people wildly speculating about a possible upcoming announcement of the long-awaited sequel to Valve’s Half-Life 2 – Episode 3, or possibly a sequel to Portal itself.

Today, just a few hours ago, Valve finally spilled the beans, announcing the upcoming release of Portal 2. Not much is known about the game yet, though it’s expected that we’ll see a mixing of the storylines of Half-Life and Portal, since it’s already known for sure that the two are related and are possibly occurring on the same timeline.

According to the news announcement, Portal 2 will be released during the holiday season – so we still have quite a wait ahead of us, but hey – this is Valve we’re talking about here. The company that always takes their time, the company that is always on the butt of every delay joke, but also the company that continues to break grounds every time it releases a new title.
