Texas Instruments has been in the news recently with their OMAP4 development device which can be used as a base for mobile devices such as ebook readers. Their latest innovative product is an industry first – combining WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and FM into a single component – the WiLink 7.0. the WiLink series earlier had combinations of the four different radios but never before has it had all four together.
The WiLink 7 squeezes in WiFi a/b/g/n, FM transmitter+receiver, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS into a chip that is some 50% smaller than existing solutions and consumes 30% less power. Since it is a single device, many problems with interconnectivity can be avoided and things like power-management and intelligent usage profiles become possible. The chip will help bring out smaller, longer lasting mobile devices which have better use of their wireless connectivity.
The WiLink 7 is currently being sampled to OEMs and products can be expected to come out next year or by the end of this year.
