IBM Launching Their Power7 Chip Systems
IBM are getting ready for the launch of their Power7 processor, awaited for so long – as well as some computer systems that use the chip. The new processor is a hue advance, as it integrates eight cores in one single chip, with each core supporting four simultaneous threads. Essentially, this makes the chip a 32-core CPU – to compare, the Xeon processors by Intel which will form the main competition for the Power7, use two threads per core as a general rule. Power7 has been designed with the Power chip design, borrowing some of its key technology from another Cell processor, which was part of IBM’s Roadrunner network at the Los Alamost National Laboratory. The Power7 systems will feature three computers, the IBM Power 780, Power 770, and the Power 775, which will be the highest-performing one of the three. These processors will surely stir up the market quite nicely, and we’ll be putting them to the test as soon as we can. [ Via CNET News ]
