The update of WebOS strangely didn’t bring the long-awaited innovations to the Palm Pre. Thankfully, the folks at HomeBrew Software are not wasting their time, and their own software titled the Precoder is now in alpha state.

The program allows you to use your Palm Pre’s camera to record 480×320 video at 30 frames per second. There are various controls for the quality, and you can even use the phone’s flash for the videos as well. The program allows you to view recorded videos right from within it.

Testing it proved to be a delightful experience – we came in expecting a lot of bugs and an unpolished user interface, but we got a product that actually worked without breaking (most of the time) and had a sleek, comfortable to navigate interface. All in all, this looks very promising, and we can’t wait to see the further developments that HomeBrew are cooking for us. Release dates have not been scheduled yet, but you should expect to see this little beauty “really soon”, according to its creators.
