Another e-book reader device has hit the market with iRex Technologies announcing their new 8.1-inch DR800SG e-reader in direct competition with Amazon’s Kindle and Sony Readers.
The device, which has an 8.1” pen-based touchscreen, along with 3G wireless connectivity courtesy of Verizon, has 2GB of internal memory with ability to get content from Barnes and Noble eBookstore. It will be capable of reading many formats like the ePub format as well as other DRM capable ebook formats.
In contrast to Amazon’s CDMA-based wireless connectivity which works only in the U.S, the DR800SG’s 3G wireless, which uses Qualcomm’s Gobi radio, will work with 3G networks around the world. There will be no data charges, as these will be included in the cost of the books that are downloaded over-the-air.
The iRex will go on sale in Best Buy stores around the US by the end of November. The retailer is planning to train its staff in ebook technology as well as set up in-store demonstration areas. iRex is promising a color version of the same by 2011.
The iRex DR800SG e-Reader is priced at $399.
