Here is the latest weapon unleashed in the browser wars. Specifically, it is a weapon wielded by Google’s Chrome against Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is a new open source plugin for Internet Explorer, called the Google Chrome Frame, that makes IE behave exactly like Google Chrome with its HTML 5 support and fast JavaScript engine. It was announced on Google’s Chromium Blog today.

The upgrade while extremely useful to users as well as developers poses a problem for Microsoft. They cannot deliberately cripple Chrome without facing a horde of bad PR which in turn would mean good PR for Chrome. But if they don’t do it, IE users will be exposed to Chrome and will possibly increase Chrome’s market share. With Google Chrome Frame, developers can now take advantage of the latest open web technologies such as HTML 5, even in Internet Explorer. For users, installing Google Chrome Frame will allow them to seamlessly enjoy modern web apps at blazing speeds, through the familiar interface of the version of IE that they are currently using.
The current version is still an early version intended for developers but nothing is stopping any common user from getting it and using it.

Since Chrome Frame works on OGGTV, and other HTML5 video sites to come, IE users have new multimedia options. The new built-in HTML5 video playback,(plus many other advanced features), can bring a browser out of the stone-age, and into the next generation of web applications.
With Chrome Frame, IE users can choose, and have access to many types of new services on the web, and access other plug-ins, like the VLC player browser plug-in which work on other browsers.
