By now you probably know all know about the Perseid meteor shower that seems to radiate from the constellation Perseus and has its peak today, but what you didn’t know is that the 2009 Perseid Meteor Shower will be Twittered.

The UK-based Newbury Astronomical Society (@newburyas) and the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (@astronomy2009uk) are going to hold the first worldwide “meteor star party” on Twitter. The guys are inviting everyone around the globe to take live pictures and tweet about everything happening at the horizon where as many as 80 meteors streaking the sky hourly. To get involved all you have to do is follow the #meteorwatch hashtag.
“We realised early on that what people want are images of the night sky, so we used our array of telescopes and cameras to provide a constant stream of pictures which we uploaded straight to Twitter … we had thousands of people who had probably never looked through a telescope before asking us questions directly and viewing images.”
So if you were wonder about times to watch and places to go to see the Perseids falling, the Twitter Meteorwatch is a great way not to miss tonight’s show.
