US District Court puts a Preliminary Injunction on RealNetworks RealDVD Sales

RealNetworks’ RealDVD is a software that every technology aficionado acknowledges owing to its capability of ripping DVD movies into a computer just as you can rip those CDs. The Software has been marred with a controversy that has now seen a United States District Court passing an injunction order-meaning that the sales of the software have been put on an immediate hold, ‘until’ a decision is made.

Legal restrictions should favor the consumers, but in this case the injunction order passed by Judge Marilyn Patel does exactly the opposite.

The injunction ensures that the consumers are devoid of using a modern and fast software and instead, restricts the consumers by supporting outdated laws and Hollywood business model.

The reason stated for an injunction was that the Judge wants to review the facts of the case. This granted preliminary injunction, pending trial in the normal course will take a couple of years to begin-so we know where we are going from here.

The court has even ignored the fact that the RealDVD wasn’t an ordinary software as it intended to curtail piracy with the software preserved encryption hindering widespread distribution. Another software-the digital rights management restricted/regulated the usage of the ripped content. I wonder how the Judge can affirm that the injunction was legally correct and supported by legal facts. [via: Engadget]
