Netbook Killer Deal from Walmart [Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM for $298]

walmart-298-laptop-compaq-presario-cq60-419wm

The netbook developers will surely not like reading this piece of information as Walmart strikes a ‘killer deal’. Rationally speaking, not many would prefer a netbook if you grab a notebook in a $298 deal. That is Walmart for you folks, and the model that is being used to lay the generous bait is the Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM.

The offering comes with a number of regular features but not as bleak as you would normally associate to a low priced machine. The 15.6-inch (1366 x 768 display) Notebook is powered by a 2.10GHz AMD Sempron processor.

Other integrations include NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics alongwith a DVD burner and a Wi-Fi device factored in. This will definitely be a limited edition deal and some of the advertisements even suggest that bricks & mortar Walmart stores will have just ten of the laptops in stock.

You needn’t be worried though, for there are more available on online. [via Slashgear]

Just bought one. Took two hours to remove all the freebie and 60 day Norton crap. It will be another two hours to create (2) recovery disks. Then, I’ll finally have a chance to test this baby and see what she can do.

[...] looks like BestBuy is trying to take on Walmart and their terrific deal on Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM at $289, with the new HP G60-458DX notebook that should be expected to be shelved at $399. Although [...]

I’m very disappointed by Compaq. I bought it, tried to create recovery disks, and I got error 1002. on their website they do not have a place to search for these specific errors. They do have a chat feature on their website for this product but it takes you to a page that says “an unexpected error has occurred”. so its hard to get support for this. I went to my local Walmart twice today, once to get 2 laptops, went back to exchange one to get a new one (because it was asking for sixteen disks to make recovery disks, while the other was only asking for two.). Now that I got the 1002 error for both, I plan on going to walmart and getting my money back. I remind you that this problem happened on two computers, and why? because I tried to make recovery disks to try to prevent any permanent damage to the new laptops, resulting in permanent damage.

John, maybe you should think about rolling back to XP. That’s a great computer for the price, don’t give up on it! If you install Windows XP on it you won’t believe how quickly it will do everything, and if you want shiny, low maintenance and fast daily use software, you could look into Ubuntu 8.04. That’s a very powerful open source operating system that uses much less of your power than Vista, and many people (me included) like the way it looks better.

My daughter just went to buy the last two in stock in our town. Can someone provide step-by-step instructions for how to delete all the pre-loaded “unnecessary” stuff? Please reply to grace_lazenby@hotmail.com. Thanks.

I just bought one also and could really some guidance on how to remove the unnecessary “junk”. If someone could please post some easy instructions..I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I heard the hard drive is really small on this, any ideas on what this laptop won’t do well? Thank you-

No, john is right, this is one crippled laptop, you can’t downgrade to XP, or upgrade to retail Vista Ultimate, my guess is that PC Decrapifier would choke on it. Return this bad boy before it is too late!

Its not a steal, but a fair price for a single processor laptop. Certainly the value of single processor laptops is such that they must be sold now very cheaply to get rid of through the most efficient sphincter available. Here licking the edges are some windows cockroaches not sure what flavor of cadaver they will install. Lets download some Lysol and hang a few pine scented air fresheners to cover the reek and stink of whats already on there because in the death of my mind I have no idea what else I could possibly invigor this half ball notebook with.

I bought my Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM from Wal-Mart three nights ago. I turned in on for 15 minutes when it said battery low switch to power supply or something like that. I had it plugged into a wall which also had a lamp in it because the lamp was on. The computer still shut itself down due to low battery power so I asked my daughter about it she suggested removing the battery once the unit was unplugged and waiting 30 seconds then putting the battery back into the unit and trying to plug it all back in again. That did not do anything. She also suggested making sure that both parts of the power supply were connected to each other, the unit and the wall. I made sure of this. The transforumer was not even a little warm and it had been plugged in for awhile so I didn’t know what was going on. I talked to my son-in-law who has an associates in computer science and he went through every possibility we could think of together before I decided to give up and call tech support. I called their number and they went through all of the steps available in their handbook and then some and nothing would get the computer to come back on.

I tried leaving it over night to see if by the morning with it being plugged in it would have charged enough to run it but the transformer remained cool so I talked to support again they said the cord must be bad and I can send the pc+ cord into them and they will repair it but I did not wish to hassle with that so I thought if I exchanged it for just another Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM it’d just be better but by the time I got back to Wal-Mart they were completely sold out and the cashier I talked to said they wouldn’t restock it.

My son-in-law also recently purchased a laptop by Compaq with a dual processor, a webcam and built in mic and other things so it costs a lot more than mine but by the 4th day he had it, his hard drive was clicking and the laptop wouldn’t properly turn on. So he has it in repair but we’ve learned something in this experience: Compaqs aren’t worth the time or hassle no matter how cheap.

Go to Notebookreview.com HP discussion area and search for my name “seeratlas” and you will find an indepth examination of this notebook. Bottom line, it can easily be made to outperform Intel HD4500 based notebooks selling for nearly $1000.00. For people who play WOW, this is a steal.

The machine really comes into its own with the Win7 RC or RTM installed. You *can* downgrade to XP if you wish, but Win7 offers a better overall experience, better memory management, and nearly equal speed in games.

For $300.00 US. this computer is a heck of a deal.
Be wary of listening to people to who have not seen one, used one, or analyzed one; or, do not have the knowledge necessary to offer an intelligent appraisal of the machine’s capabilities. I do, and I can tell you that I set up 3 of these for family/friends, and after seeing what they can do, went down and purchased one myself.
